Ernest Rutherford hits Cotton Street

A life-sized model of Nobel Prize winner Ernest Rutherford was unveiled in the Cotton Building last Wednesday.

The model, created for a display in Canterbury museum in 1978, was gifted to Victoria University by Gary Sutton, specialist preparator of the Rutherford statue.

Professor Paul Callaghan, who won the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Rutherford Medal in 2005 spoke at the unveiling.

Callaghan also heads the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology at Victoria, and says the University is a fitting place for the Rutherford model as a result of such scientific initiatives.

About 50 people attended the unveiling, and were treated to 20 minutes of speeches followed by complementary wine and nibbles.
