By-Election

Last month’s VUWSA by-election came down to the wire, with very little separating the winners from the losers.

Gabrielle Stewart was elected Women’s Rights Officer (WRO) by a 37 vote majority, while Education Officer Paul Danger Brown won by a mere 10 votes.

Both candidates are thrilled with their wins, and say things are going great at VUWSA.

Brown says he’s putting in well over his 10 paid hours per week, and is working hard to “address a number of matters” within both the University and VUWSA, including the Campus Hub project. Despite nominating himself for the position “after a few too many drinks at the bar”, Brown is pleased to now be a part of the VUWSA team, doing “a lot of the grunt work”.

Stewart says she is approaching her role with “an open mind”, liasing between women’s groups and VUWSA. Stewart hopes to involve as many students as possible in upcoming women’s events, throughout re-orientation and later in the year, with campaigns such as ‘Thursdays in Black’. Stewart also hopes to raise the profile of the ever-expanding MyVictoria discussion board, by encouraging all women who have an interest in what’s going on for women on campus to check it out.

Despite a minimal amount of election campaigning, voter turnout was higher than usual. 784 students voted, with the simple online voting system and efforts of Returning Officer Pippa Strom attributed with the election’s success.
