Big K Promotes Binge Drinking

Salient Shocked

Our favourite Wellington bar, the Big Kumara—more affectionately known to us student folk as “da Big K”—is in hot water for reportedly inciting irresponsible drinking on its Facebook page.

Its encouraging its patrons to “sacrifice sobriety” and “get into it” has sparked complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority.

One such complainant said the bar’s advertising “consistently and over a long period of time encouraged customers to get drunk in an irresponsible fashion”.

With nearly 9100 likes on Facebook, the Big K’s page is known for its photo albums of embarrassing drunken stupor and status updates along the lines of “time for a midweek bender,” or, “another perfect sunny Friday in Wellington, OTP [on the piss] is the call.”

Big K manager Jono Huntington said that “it was an employment issue” that has been “dealt with very seriously”, and has resulted in the enactment of a new social media policy.
