Campus Disconnections

Students are still having problems with accessing Uni Wi-Fi, despite the University saying the problem has been solved.

The University most recently admitted to problems with the system on 4 April, tweeting that they were currently experiencing problems with Wi-Fi on campuses, and that “ITS are aware of the issue and are working to restore it.”

Peter Borich, Associate Director Infrastructure and Services, ITS Service and Operations Group, said that the problem “was unfortunately caused by an error made during a planned upgrade to the wireless network to increase capacity and performance.”

“These issues have been resolved, and we are confident that the wireless network at Victoria University will continue to meet the requirements of the 11,500 users regularly connecting each day,” Borich said.

Despite this, students have continued to report that accessing Wi-Fi at University, particularly from mobile devices, is difficult or even impossible.

“Yeah fuck them. It’s getting into week 6 and I want to be able to connect with my mobile,” one student complained on Overheard @ Vic.

The University computer systems had initially been unable to keep up with students’ return to study in March.

At that time, Borich said the connectivity issue was due to a software fault with the wireless controllers, and confirmed the fault was “resolved with the assistance from our network supplier [sic]”.

A “planned upgrade to the wireless network” went ahead around week five of the trimester to address the issues with the connection and improve the performance of the network. The upgrade involved at least one “scheduled outage”.
