Next week is the launch of the Thursdays in Black report “In Our Own Words”. The report draws from a comprehensive and wide-reaching survey which, broadly speaking, asked students about their experiences of sexual assault and harassment, sexuality education, institutional policies and support, and LGBTQIA+ and ableism discrimination.

Thursdays in Black have analysed the results of this survey in collaboration with a variety of community groups, including Gender Minorities Aotearoa, InsideOUT, Can Do at Vic, Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation, and Mosaic. Active inclusion is so important. For Thursdays in Black to achieve its aim of a world free from rape and violence, all people must be safe, supported, and brought along with the movement.

I encourage you to come along to the report launch to hear what students have said about issues of sexuality, discrimination, and violence. These issues run across our population. We cannot efficiently improve the status quo until we have listened and empathised with our peers so that we understand the situation.

This report launch marks the beginning of a new wave of the Thursdays in Black campaign on campuses across New Zealand. The Thursdays in Black movement will be informed, deliberate, and powerful. If you agree with Thursdays in Black that a different reality is possible where all people are safe in our community — then look out for volunteer opportunities and remember to join the movement by wearing black on Thursdays.

“In Our Own Words” launches August 24, 10:00am–12:00pm, in the Memorial Theatre on Kelburn Campus. RSVP to the event on Facebook.

**Trigger warning**

This event will include discussions and descriptions of sexual violence, including but not limited to: sexual harassment, sexual assault, transphobic/homophobic/biophobic violence, racism.
