Hi students of VUW! My name is Bua – I am a PhD student majoring in positive psychology, and I am also the SWAT leader for 2018. SWAT (Student Wellbeing Awareness Team) is a team of students who meet weekly to discuss ways in which we could empower students to take care of our health and wellbeing.

University is a unique place where students learn and develop intellectually as well as personally. It’s a place where we get to explore existing ideas and innovative new ones, as well as discover our own identity, values, and aspirations. It is a place for growth and development. Growing – as we all know – can be quite uncomfortable. Transitioning from the structured nature of high school to the responsibilities and independence of university is challenging and can be quite unsettling. You may start to question what your values are, and who you are as a person, leading to a sense of feeling lost. Academic, social, and financial pressures are also stressors that students experience. Therefore, it is very important that we take the time to care for our health and wellbeing.

SWAT is here to help students navigate through university life by campaigning and putting on wellbeing events. We also run awesome workshops throughout the year, such as mindfulness meditation, and tips to stop procrastination. We always love to welcome new volunteers, and so if you share our passion to help others live well, email us at to join our team and champion for student wellbeing!

Lastly, to new students – welcome to VUW, make the most of orientation week, sign up to clubs, don’t forget to check out the recreation centre for deals on gym membership, and be courageous and say hi to other students. We are all in the same boat now!

Best of luck for your studies, and make the most of 2018!
