Album Review: The Hot Grits – It’s Too Drunk To Be This Early

Posted by Lucy Von Sturmer & filed under Music.

To be honest the genre ‘African Soul Funk’ isn’t my favourite and as to be expected after a few songs I was reaching for the off button fast.

However, to be fair this twelve-piece band do what that they do well. The Hot Grits are a band you’d expect to see fronting a big summer festival. Their music is loud, it’s ‘funky’ and it demands that you forget your uber cool and get up and groove.

My favourite song ‘I Am My Own Government Mother Fucker’ is definitely the best. I mean that in an autocratic tyrannical sort of way. Yes, it’s a fact. The rest of the album I fail to remember with any significance.

I don’t mean to be down on these guys. Their music is upbeat and would definitely make for a good night’s dancing, but it’s the kind of album that’s best suited to fans who want to relive the festival funk experience in their own home. Unfortunately, that’s just not me, but you can decide for yourself. The Hot Grits play Mighty Mighty on May 17th.

Wouldn’t it be more constructive and informative to have the album reviewed by someone who actually likes the genre?

Think it’s called “The Ballad of Joe Stalin” not “I am My Own Government…”
    Cool album too.
    Uber cool? Twat.

    Wow, what a terrible review.
Nothing was said except – ‘I don’t really like fun, dance-able, funky music because I’m uber cool. This album made me have fun so I listened to the first couple of tracks (one of which, I quite liked) and quickly turned it off.’
I think The Hot Grits are on to a fucking good thing. Check out their new ‘Headlights’ video on youtube. Although, be careful, you might enjoy it.
