(Classic Album) David Bowie :: Diamond Dogs (April 1974)
I thought this appropriate, while the reek of Bowie-mania still lingers in our city. The man himself even kicked off the dazzling show with track no. 6 ‘Rebel Rebel’ from the album (he managed a newer version mind you). Bowie disbanded the Spiders from Mars, opting to play most of the instruments on the album himself. Deciding not entrust his music with unfamiliar musicians, he set about recording what was originally to be a concept album based on Orwell’s novel ‘1984.’ This did not eventuate; nevertheless the title track remains one of Bowie’s greatest songs today. Aficionados and critics alike may disagree, however, what appeals most is Bowie’s loose, candid, rhythm-style guitar and morbid lyrical inspiration. Bowie had ditched the Spiders and reinvented his sound once again. It wouldn’t be the last time.
