Hhmm.. Gangs deze daize
I dont really understand why people would want to join in a gang. The only results is death or jail. I do understand voilent backgrounds, addictions, “respect” and the negative environments that surrounds our next generation blah blah As i myself come from this background along with patch members.

unfortunately the synergy that all gangs provide just begets further evils and one must never ever condone such scum.
Sympathy is not warranted for those who having lived by the sword, die by it. Moldy old Muldoon might well have irreverently joked, as was his wont, that Epps’ passing merely raised the IQ in both places (Newtown & Hell) although they were practically synomonous in that era in any case.

A pleasant enough holiday spot but it pays not to poke under the surface lest the pestilent underbelly befouls one’s hands. Many symptons which bedevil primary-producer small towns are present: limited gene-pool/functional illiteracy/unemployment/racism/paranoia, all capped off with far too much alcohol & pot. Perhaps such a heady 1970s mixture spawned the Lost Breed MC which seems to have had its zenith in the aftermath of a 1979 pitched battle with Highway 61 on Nelson’s main street.
That battle, the ensuing trial and the fact that the RNZAF had to be called upon to transport Lost Breeders en masse to Mt Crawford prison, made national headlines at that time.

However Lost Breed membership levels and activity had fallen off, in common with all the remaining “traditional” South Island MCs: Lost Breed, Lone Legion, Epitah Riders, Devils Henchmen & Southern Vikings. It is a moot point whether Road Knights MC can now be called a traditional MC since the schism over skinhead links and Harris Republican Army involvement.

While Road Knights battle the Mongrel Mob/Black Power in Timaru & Invercargill, those street gangs hold sway in Christchurch & Dunedin.
Only in Nelson & Blenheim have traditional MCs kept out both the street gangs and the white supremists such as the Fourth Reich. One wonders at the recently renaissant Lost Breed…Unlike cannabis, the North Island based street gangs haven’t found Tasman Bay to be fertile soil yet. The twilight world of the OMCGs is a tightknit one that thrives on good intelligence, no MC president has ever been taken napping like Epps was, it is unlikely that the recent advent of the Red Devils MC was without any warning signs.

In the early 80s, the Lost Breed tolerated the ephemeral West Coast based Coastal Rogues MC. Coastal Rogues MC soon folded after several Christchurch MCs “trophied” a number of Coastal Rogue patches directly off member’s backs and it certainly didn’t have the powerful backing that Red Devils MC has.
However the Hell Angels backed Red Devils MC is an altogether different prospect.That Hells Angels is basically a multinational can be seen from its strategic decisions; to remain in Wanganui but to withdraw from Hastings.

This is the 21st century and the growth industry is P which the Lost Breed is ostensibly opposed to but Hell Angels counternance.
Time alone will tell.

Biker Gal – While we took the Highway 61 bit from a news report at the time, I’ve followed it up and yes, they and subsequently we made a mistake, for which we apologise and have corrected in the above text.

Thanks for a great article Tristan — good to hear someone who is clever without losing his voice.
I had a job once painting the rafters of a Wellington warehouse on a cherry picker and it was pretty wobbly, which meant I spent a lot of the time it took thinking about falling.
At one point I thought about the proces of my life flashing before my eyes in the event that I fell to my death, and I thought to myself — “My life wouldn’t look to bad.
Haven’t killed anyone, haven’t raped anyone, never stole much more than dirty mags as a kid.”
That little moment of smug self-congratulation was interupted by a certainty that I have to put into words, because it arrived fully formed. It said:
“You haven’t done those things because it is not in your nature to do those things, so you can’t claim any credit for their absence. If you are to be judged, you will be judged alone, and judged on the basis of what you have made of what you have been given.”
The way we’re dealing with gangs is not working because people get a kick out of feeling smug that they are not those people.
I have contacts in both the power and the mob and every time I go into their environment I feel a bit dirty, but as you say, none of those guys like the life in private.
Compassion works, and is the only way out for all of us.
If I’m asked I tell them “Any real gangster wants his kids to go legit, and if you don’t have a plan to go legit, you’re just fucking around — think about JFK. His did was a criminal.”
They seem to get this, and although I’ve had a few tense moments, I’ve never had serious hassles because when the shit goes down — no shit — I act like C3P0.
