Aropax wrecked my life and very nearly ended it.
I should never have been put on it but surprise, surprise I was given free samples of it that drug companies had pushed onto my doctor. While on the medication I saw my doctor and said I was feeling really down and had begun harming myself and he doubled my dousage which just saw me end up in psychiatrict emergency!!!

Crazily enough it took a long time before I realised that the drug was the problem. I feel better than ever now as I have cut down to 5mg but the withdrawal symptoms are really really hard to deal with. I was naieve and thought 'hell they can't be that bad I've been through alot of crap I can handle it" but the last 5 mg is really hard to get rid of.

I read "Dying for a cure" which is a fantastic and very informative book written by a lady in Australia. She was diagnosed with post natal depression and was put on anti depressants but she got worse. Very interesting.

Be very very careful before taking these drugs!!!!!! They aren't a miracle cure! My advice to anyone suffering from depression is to first try therapy and look into alternative methods. St Johns Wort has been researched to prove just as effective as anti depressants without the side effects. There are heaps more too. And check out paxilprogress.com too. It is a forum for people trying to come out this medication (Paxil is the American brand name for Aropax)

I personally have had hard times in my life and felt like stopping the world and getting off, my doctor offered me prozac and I said no straight away. What happened to the old pick yourself up and dust yourself off words spoken to everyone back in the day? I think the doctors these days are far to quick to prescribe all this rubbish to keep their practices going FOR EXAMPLE:
!. you go to the doctor feeling depressed and dont want to be breathing...there solution, anti-depressants
2.you go to the doctor unable to breathe properly...there solution, inhalers for asthma even if you have never had asthma before, you're over weight and smoke HELLO

When are the alarm bells going to go off that we are spending 27 million dollars on masking the problem and start making people deal with their own reality.

Aropax (NZ and Australia) is Paxil in the US, and Serotax in the UK. It is NZ's most-often-prescribed anti-depressant drug. NZ lags behind other countries in recognising the problems with this drug. Makers GlaxoSmithKline maintain a glossy Aropax website here in NZ (after all, they are still making good money off the drug here), but have pared down to bare bones sites in the US and UK. Go to www.gsk.com and click on Paxil for the US info, which begins with the government's "black box" warning; and on Serotax for a more readable and informative, but equally alarming, summary of the drug. For an Australian perspective of SSRI use, have a read of this excellent investigative article titled "Aropax Nation": http://www.investigatemagazine.com/Australia/Paxil.htm or check out Australian forensic psychiatrist Yolanda Lucire's article "New Drugs, New Problems" at www.lucire.co.au which attributes over 400 deaths a year to SSRI's. You wanna take this stuff? Yuk!

"The side effects are listed as drowsiness, dry mouth, nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, decreased appetite and decreased sexual function."

This sounds much like a bad hangover.

It seems to me that going on a low dosage anti-depressant (whether it be for a short while, or a long while) is a much better option than any of the following ‘coping strategies’, that I observed (and may have even tried) during my years at university...

- binge drinking
- chain smoking
- living on marijuana and two-minute noodles
- living off junk-food from vending machines at uni
- taking no-doz
- taking ‘herbals’
- punching people who piss you off
- drinking 5+ coffees a day
- converting to scientology (ok, I don’t know anyone who has done this, but apparently it’s sooo hot right now)
- going to the Big Kumara to prey on first years
- committing/attempting suicide

I think we should count ourselves lucky to live in a society where options such as anti-depressants, counselling services, and mental health support services are available to us.

i have been taking fluox for several months and have found a general uplift in my mood. that is all it does, it doesn't solve your problems, it just puts you in a better space of mind so that you can try to face your issues. i did find that i had side affects from changing my dosage but this left when i went back to my normal regime (not the greatest to be getting sick everyday of an internally assesed feild trip).

to treat depression by just taking prozac/fluox is not the answer. you have to want to be treated. i found that seeing a counselor and taking about my problems, combined with actively trying to alter negative thoughts and actions, and antidepressants do help, but u have to take responsibility for it and want to be treated. no one will be able to successfully treat you if u don't want it.

fluox/prozac is like any drug, u have to take the good with the bad, with hopefully the good outweighing the bad. drugs are not always the answer. i would recommend students look at why they fell the way they do and actively seek help, that is the biggest step but it is so important.
