Really I was just joking about the tasering! But what is fucked up about her opinion especially about Timor is the ANZAC troops went in to stop Timorese being tortured in this manner by the Indonesian military and police. Would the Timorese prefer the indonesians to reoccupy the country again? The situation today is far more preferable to what it was.

Her stance is not really one of being against imperialism, militirism or human rights abuses on principle but just selected examples where certain western countries are involved. That is the only criteria that she had for protesting. If she held a protest at the Chinese embassy against involvement of PetroChina in Sudan the the propping up of the Zimbabwean regime then her interest in human rights would come across as genuine. I think that she's a fake and a hypocrite for that reason as there is no consistency in her principles. If you think about her statements in the context of what has just happened then she makes no sense or is suffering from acute self-delusion.

"Seeming to stop something from happening in that moment in time doesn’t necessarily stop those things from happening over and over and over again."

So what do you want to happen, ignore human rights abuses because they are probably going to occur in a future Timor. That is a cynical rationale that Kissinger would have been proud of to justify.

"What we need to do is to perhaps let them sort out their own lives and go from there."

Hello! Anyone remembering the rioting, killings, anarchy and civil war that broke out recently? Let's just forget about that since it inconviences our rose tinted views. What the Timorese need is a strong civil society with rule of law and reliable government institutions. Do you think those things appear out of thin air in a devestated country with little capacity or experience to develop them?

Being a New Zealander is more than just being born in Takapuna and living in Wellington for 10 years. Its acknowledging and respecting the importance our culture and traditions of which ANZAC day is an important part. Her protest simply demonstrates her ignorance of what it is to be a New Zealander. Hardly a gutsy move is it?

Yes, I am aware that she was born here, but she lived much of her life in amerca, and NZ would be a much better place if she went back there.

Now there's a thought. How about starting a collection to buy her a one-way ticket?

What utter disrespect on such a day. I am saddend that we have people of such belligerence in this bloody great country of ours. Years ago I was deployed too one of those countries and nearly went to a second one of the three she refers to. Even just our presence in one area put a scared village at ease due too two of them being tortured to death and the rest of them being held captive for four days on a beach several months before hand. Does this woman think soldiers go overseas to club babies and abuse their women?!? Im now thinking she just likes the sound of her own (attention seeking) voice a bit too much. The idea in Johns post carries weight... but, Ms Morse, open your eyes and WAKE UP!

hmmmm the soldiers fought for our freedom, and when someone consequently exercises their freedom of speech she is arrested and people say she shouldn't say things like she did and when she did? So what freedom were these soldiers fighting for???

New Zealanders fought overseas so people like her can be free! She should respect that by not insulting those freedom fighters.

I used to be proud of having been part the peace movement in this country and having made a modest contribution towards making New Zealand a nuclear weapon free zone.

However, arrogant american Valerie Morse, in choosing our most scared national day to burn our flag, has also burnt the reputation of the peace movement.

While it could be argued that the rabble of protestors that violated the dawn parade may have had a point, an ANZAC Day service was not the place to make it.

If Ms Morse despises New Zealand so much, I politely suggest that she may like to go back to america, and stay there.

When she is there, she might like to burn her own country’s flag and see what happens.

She also may like to pay us back the $7,500 scholarship that she was granted in 2003 by the Peace and Disarmament Education Trust.

I think she's gutsy for doing something like that. It's certainly true that it offended a lot of people, but it also got a lot more attention than laying a wreath would have done. Her stance is fair, and if people pay attention to why she protested rather than just being shocked and closed minded towards it, then they may discover they agree with her, and her reasoning. She is not a wild hippie making a fuss for the sake of it. I found what she had to say very convincing, I agreee with her cause. Burning a flag to point out important ongoing war issues is not a huge offense in my opinion. Good on ya :)
