The benefit’s for the New Zealand education sector derived from the China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are limited to spin-offs, say industry insiders.
Education New Zealand chief executive, Robert Stevens, is hailing the FTA as a success however, in terms of raising the education sectors overseas profile.
China is now committed to maintaining its current list of approved New Zealand tertiaryeducation providers, of which all this country’s public institutions are included as well as six degree-granting private training organizations added in 2006.
What this effectively amounts to, says Minister of Education Chris Carter, is emphasis on how Chinese Students view the New Zealand education system. “At this moment in China, our country’s profile couldn’t be higher, so this has been the perfect opportunity to make sure Chinese students see New Zealand as an education provider of first choice.”
