I have a public-service announcement to make: there’s now a dumpling shop opened in Wellington. I’ve long lamented the lack of vegetarian dumplings in this fair city, so you can imagine my excitement when I found out that House of Dumplings had opened on Taranaki St.

Full apologies for another brownie recipe. But once you try this, I think you’ll want it in your life as much as I do. Normal brownies are good, but black-and-white brownie is even better. Soft, sweet, chocolate-chip-filled brownie topped with a chewy cheesecake layer? Yes please.

Although Wellington has a plethora of takeaway sushi establishments, there are relatively few Japanese restaurants. Luckily, we have Arashi to make up for it. Situated in the middle of Courtney Place, with an extensive menu, and moderately priced, Arashi is a great option for a dinner, BYO or not.

Do you ever get hit by a chocolates craving? Not just an ordinary chocolate craving, which is fairly easily dealt with, but a need for actual chocolates. Fancy, creamy, with interesting flavours.

I’m a big fan of the large numbers of Vietnamese restaurants popping up over Wellington at the moment. Although my favourite is Little Hanoi, I’m always keen to try a new one. As soon as The Lotus opened, I had it on my list of places to go.

Over the last few years, I’ve gotten tired of cupcakes. Appearing everywhere, usually both dry and sickly sweet. I didn’t plan to do a cupcake recipe for this column, but after making these I just had to share them.

I’m always excited about a trip to Little Hanoi. Not quite as excited as I would be with a trip to non-little Hanoi, but excited nonetheless. Despite being a small and unassuming restaurant at the end of Left Bank (off Cuba Mall), it serves up some of the best Vietnamese food in Wellington.

These are fast and delicious, with the mixture put together in only a few minutes. The result is thoroughly worth it, producing soft puffy biscuits with a rich coconut flavour.
